VELCRO® History and Application Hints

Hook & Loop fasteners were invented in the late 1940’s by Swiss engineer, George de Mestral. The idea came from Burdock seeds which stuck to his clothes during walks in the Alps. He saw the possibilities of fastening two materials simply and reversibly by duplicating the Burdock seeds affect. After development, he submitted a hook and loop patent in 1951 which was granted in 1955. The invention was named "VELCRO" after the French words velours, meaning 'velvet', and crochet, or 'hook'. Variations of that basic “VELCRO” have resulted in over 300 trademark registrations in countries around the world.

The strength of a hook and loop tape bond or “closure” depends on the shape of the hooks, how well the hooks are embedded in the loops and the direction of the force pulling it apart. When one or both of the pieces can be pulled apart with a peeling action, which applies the force to a relatively few hooks at a time, then a low force is needed for separation.

With any Velcro or Speedwrap self-engaging fastener, there are ways to maximize the strength of the tape’s bond. One is to increase the area of the bond, e.g. the length and width of the strap where the hook and loop material is located. Another is to ensure the tape is used so that the forces are applied only in parallel to the plane of the fastener surface, e.g. by bending part of the tape around a corner or through a slot like with cinch Cable Ties. This reduces the force acting on the fastener by directing the force parallel to the plane of the fastener.
