Hook & Loop fasteners were invented in the late 1940’s by Swiss engineer, George de Mestral. The idea came from Burdock seeds which stuck to his clothes during walks in the Alps. He saw the possibilities of fastening two materials simply and reversibly by duplicating the Burdock seeds affect. He submitted a hook and loop patent in 1951 which was granted in 1955. The invention was named "VELCRO" after the French words velours, meaning 'velvet', and crochet, or 'hook'. Variations of that basic “VELCRO” have resulted in over 300 trademark registrations in countries around the world.
